The Tail Light: Part 2

“Don’t believe everything you hear.”

For us, this cliche it is even more applicable in our era than ever. Between countless social media fronts and print materials (if your lifestyle even permits time to read those), there is a plethora of information readily available.

But consider this. What if it wasn’t where the information is coming from that we need to question? What if we took one of the oldest cliches out there and put a little spin on it. What if the phrase was “Don’t believe…”

The Pause For Thought

A couple of years ago, my friend Sam gave me a copy of Tim Ferriss’ Tools of Titans. Tim is a podcaster that has interviewed some of the world’s most successful people from varying arenas like business, military, and lifestyle pioneers. He highlights the memorable moments in this written compilation of 700 plus pages. This pause for thought comes from his interview with BJ Miller, MD, a hospice care physician.

TF: What would you put on a billboard?

BJ: “Don’t believe everything you think.”

Talk about a spin on our aforementioned cliche. BJ isn’t just suggesting that people think critically about the stuff they’ve heard, but to think critically about their foundational beliefs; the stuff around which they have built any given segment of their lives.

Now For the Putting Stuff

Someday I’ll slip in a short game article to keep you on your toes, but not today. For now, it always comes back to putting.

Remember in The Tail Light: Part 1 when we highlighted how important awareness is for players? Since this is Part 2 of that story, think about how much better your performance would be if you were aware of the right stuff.

Golfers tend to take the information they have acquired for face value and in too many cases treat it as doctrine. They want someone to hold their hand along the path of least resistance which has resulted in the unfortunate perpetration of useless myths and junk.

Is there something that you think is important in your putting that you might need to reconsider? In fact, do you even know what’s really important when it comes to putting? Is it taking the putter straight back and straight through? What about keeping your eyes over the ball? How about your head staying still?
